Introduction to Free Motion Quilting: Part 2 - Ruler Work

This class will focus on getting you started using rulers with free motion quilting. Rulers enable you to get perfect lines and shapes in your quilting, such as circles and curves. To use rulers, you will need a ruler foot for your machine. The foot has a wall that slides along the edge of the ruler. For a Bernina machine this will be foot #72 or #72S.

The rulers used in free motion quilting are not the same as the ones used to cut fabric. They are usually 1/4" thick clear acrylic. For a Bernina machine, your quilt ruler must be 1/4" in thickness. You may bring rulers you already have, and there will also be appropriate rulers available to use in class. We will be learning with an Amanda Murphy designed panel. The panel-made-quilt sandwich will be available for purchase the day of the class, and is required.

Any machine can be used for this class as long as you can lower the feed dogs, have the appropriate ruler foot for your machine, and have rulers the correct height for your machine. (Not all machine brands ruler height is 1/4", some feet and rulers use 3/8" height.) Some sort of slide on table or Sew Steady table for your machine is recommended to have a stable surface under the rulers.
